Dark Tactics

Every fight is a puzzle you can see the answer to.

A turn-based tactics RPG in 16-pixel armour. No hit rolls, no crit rolls — tap an enemy and the card tells you exactly what both sides will take. Everything you can get wrong is a decision you actually made.

What you are actually doing

Ground, reach and turn order. That is the whole game.

The forecast is the truth

Damage is strength minus defence and whatever the ground is worth, floored at zero. No dice are rolled anywhere, so the numbers on the confirmation card are the numbers you get — including the counter-attack coming back at you.

Terrain is a decision

Forest and mountain cost more to enter and pay a point of defence for it. A fort pays the same and makes its holder hard to double. Ice is quick and dangerous. Armour cannot climb; a horse will not enter a wood cheaply.

Losses are real

A unit that falls is out for the rest of that battle and earns nothing from it. Nobody is deleted forever — but the fight you are in gets harder for the rest of its turns, which is what makes a bad trade feel like one.

Who you field

Fifty-one classes across three tiers, and the difference is a rule.

A class earns its name by changing something the game checks: what it can walk over, how far it strikes, what it is holding, and how it promotes. Knights and armour pay for their bulk on rough ground, riders cover the field and cannot climb, archers and mages open at two tiles and have to stay there.

A line-up of twelve pixel-art unit classes: knight, myrmidon, archer, mage, sage, cavalier, lancer, nomad, berserker, guard, duelist and jarl.

Where you fight

Nine biomes, from the first hayfield to the last bastion.

Rivers with one ford, keeps with one gate, a wood that closes in around a trail. Every board is built the same way the game builds them at runtime — these are the real thing, not mock-ups.

Green field crossed by a river, four player units below it and bandits above.
Field
A frozen ford: snow and ice, a mounted archer and a knight facing a warlord and a yeti.
Frost
An underground vault of stone and webs with spiders and a wraith holding the far end.
Dungeon
A blighted plain in cold greys and violets, a keep at the top of the map.

Two people, one Wi-Fi

Play together without an account, a server or a login.

  1. Host on one phone

One device opens a game and starts announcing itself on your network. Nothing leaves the building.

  2. The other one just sees it

The lobby lists the games it can find. There is no code to read out and no address to type.

  3. Split a team, or take sides

Co-op gives you two units each against the game. Versus hands each of you a full party on one of 74 maps that can be fought fairly from both ends.

Questions

Before you download

Does it need an internet connection?

No. The whole campaign is offline. Playing with someone else needs both devices on the same Wi-Fi — neither needs an account or anything of ours.

Is there randomness in combat?

None. No hit rolls, no critical rolls. The forecast shown before you confirm an attack is exactly what happens to both sides. What varies is terrain, position and who moves first.

Does it cost anything?

The game is free. There is an occasional advert between battles once you are past the opening chapters, and optional rewarded adverts for bonus experience or to bring back a unit that fell. A one-off purchase removes adverts for good.

Do I need an account?

No sign-up, no login, no profile. Your progress is written to your own device and stays there — see the privacy policy for exactly what is stored and what is not.

Is it a gacha, or does it have energy timers?

Neither. There are no loot boxes, no summon rates, no stamina bar and nothing that stops you playing until tomorrow. Characters join by clearing the chapter that unlocks them.
